Tony Awards 2011 : le raz-de-marée "The Book of Mormon"Hier soir, le Beacon Theatre de New York accueillait la cérémonie très attendue des Tony Awards, présentée par Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother; Sweeney Todd; Dr. Horrible…)
Comme chaque année, le comité d’administration des Tony a récompensé les meilleurs pièces de théâtre et musicals à avoir ouvert la saison passée à Broadway.

Finalement, la cérémonie n’aura malheureusement fait l’objet d’aucune surprise. The Book of Mormon (le musical acide écrit par les créateurs de South Park et le compositeur d’Avenue Q), donné grande favori, a raflé 9 récompenses dont celle du Meilleur musical. Un score meilleur que Memphis (4 Tony en 2010), mais qui n’égale pas les 10 récompenses de Billy Elliot en 2009, ni le record détenu par The Producers qui en avait remporté 12 en 2001.
Anything Goes, reprise du musical de Cole Porter créé en 1934, est loin derrière avec 3 Tony. Catch Me If You Can, How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying et Priscilla Queen of the Desert repartent tous avec une seule récompense pour lot de consolation.
La grande déception de la soirée revient à The Scottsboro Boys, le dernier musical du duo John Kander et Fred Ebb, les auteurs adulés de Chicago, Cabaret ou encore Kiss of the Spider Woman (Le Baiser de la femme araignée). Un coup dur pour une pièce excellente qui avait fermé prématurément malgré un beau succès d’estime, et qui comptait sur les Tony Awards pour éventuellement retrouver le chemin de Broadway.

Du côté des catégories théâtrales, c’est War Horse qui réalise le meilleur score avec 5 Tony. Cette pièce, qui suit le destin de deux chevaux de guerre à l’aube du premier conflit mondial, repose sur d’imposantes marionnettes équines, chacune animée par trois manipulateurs.
The Normal Heart, pièce de 1985 écrite par Larry Kramer et qui explore l’épidémie de SIDA qui a frappé New-York au début des années 80, a, quant à elle, remporté 3 récompenses dont le Tony pour la Meilleure reprise d’une pièce.
